It’s actually alot of fun. There’s a real inner peace to being out there first thing in the morning when the world isn’t awake yet. Plus fresh perch through the ice is one of the tastiest fish you can have. But you really need to know and understand the ice conditions. Not everyone enjoys it.

Yea weather, average temperature, wind speed, wind direction, size of the body of water, amount of water moving through the area under the ice, how much ice is already there, amount of water on top of the ice, quality of the ice are just some of the factors. Ice can be dangerous but just because Champlain is unsafe doesn’t mean that other ponds with different factors are. Never assume the spot 15’ ahead of you has the same amount of ice as the spot you’re standing on, let alone the ice across town.

Vermont has a system that allows for state-wide school choice for high school grades, so your place of living may not have to be determined by where you want to go to school. I'm not an expert so ... call the Vermont Department of Education and ask them about high school choice. You will also want to check local school district policies of the place you live if it is separate from where you want to attend HS.

So short answer: call VT Dept of ED and ask about public high school choice.

No.

They provide additional boyancy to keep you from going under for a limited period of time (normally about 2hrs). That protects you from the immediate danger (drowning) which gives time to self rescue (using ice picks to crawl out) or be rescued.

You still need to dry off and heat up as soon as possible.

Thanks, everyone! This is really helpful information and I think we’ll probably go for it. One thing I’m unsure of is the actual power requirements. I did the site survey via pictures and they haven’t said anything regarding upgrades to service so I think we’re just going to give it a shot and see what happens. Not really in a place to do a bunch of upgrades so hopefully that’s not the case! In any case, thank you all again!

No it's not an example of that. Where in all that description did we read about the other driver making a poor choice? We didn't. All we know is they came from the other side of the highway.

You may well be correct, and probably are. Let's not pretend that mechanical failure, tire failure etc can all cause accidents at no fault of the owner/driver.
