Vermont’s laws, regulations, complicated permitting processes, and slow court systems have made being a developer or landlord very expensive here relative to other states. The risk/reward ratio just doesn’t make sense for anything other than luxury housing.

This is only one part of the perfect storm that we find ourselves in, but it is indeed a large part of the problem. Will be really interested to see what they come up with. Hopeful it will make a difference because something needs to be done, even if it’s not perfect at first

Must be something in Fairfax water—similarly, when asked by the host in a public access interview about her Prop 5/ Article 22 (reproductive rights protection) stances, Rep. Ashley Bartley deflected with the nonanswer “lots of misinformation out there…”.

Also transparently shittily, nearby Franklin-4’s Bob Norris mentioned he based his Gilead-loving stances on a number of postcards he had received! Even the mild-mannered interviewer probed him further to get him to admit it was Astroturf.

I don't see a problem with the vast majority of this. We need to stop living in the days gone by where Vermont can be majority single-family homes and wide open spaces. More people live here now, and we need to be realistic about how to house them.

The people complaining about government control here are off-base. State control of housing is literally the opposite of what caused this problem; a hands-off approach led to developers choosing over and over again to only build luxury properties, leaving the majority of residents with little to no affordable options.

And if you want to try a local frozen delicacy you should really go for a creemee! Not sure what parts of the state you will hit but Palmer Lane Maple in Jericho, Morse Farm Maple Sugar Works in Montpelier and Burlington Bay on the waterfront in Burlington are all great options (and they have flavors beside maple). Canteen Creemee in Waitsfield & Crossroads Deli jn Waterbury are also solid options.

Spot on. Contractors are in demand here. Why would a contractor waste their time on creating a bid and doing all the overhead work for a small job when they have big jobs right there?

With the costs of overhead here, putting out expensive proposals is the only way contractors are going to do the job.

Real estate is very seasonal. There will be many more listings after the mud. Nobody wants to list their home during the time it's most difficult to get around.

I would not recommend the Greyhound route- last time I took it it was over 2 hours late and the driver proceeded to get very lost in Boston because they had not trained her on the city beforehand.
