I remember being in Hannaford right after mask mandates hit. A teen employee was asking people walking into the store to put on a mask. He had a box of masks right there that you could take one if needed. I watched an older woman start screaming at this kid for daring tell her what to do. He'd never told her more than "it's store policy now" and was polite and calm the entire time. She proceeded to push her cart into him.

When you're being paid minimum wage and dealing with people like that, I can't imagine wanting to stay in that position. It's not surprising to me that stores are still trying to fill spots.

Relatively - just a few years, but it's been really chill while I've been here. Maybe it's not so much in different parts of town, but downtown is quiet most of the time.

Edit: do people think that Waterbury is dangerous or something? I've never had even one problem. Granted, I might look a little scary to some people myself, tall and scruffy.

I’m not complaining I used to be a bagger it was my first job in high school and it was a position itself that I applied for. Was just curious if it was a cultural thing etc or if it’s just trying to save money by switching to self checkout and abandoning the position itself. it’s called a service industry for a reason by the way. marginal savings by bosses is what I assumed it to be but yeah sure 😂
