I don't know of the other person you speak of, but it sounds like you took that a little too personally. I made that connection because the people who attended parties like this with more likely to be sympathetic and less Karen like as exhibited in the comments throughout. I figured that was a quite obvious reason, but hey I guess not so there you go.

Vermont statically has some of the lowest teen drunk driving cases and though the cases have gone up over the years that can be attributed to other factors of the child being raised and not the direct access to partying. Youth entitlement has never been more prevalent in this state, and they get it from their parents. Granted that statement is hyperbolic and hearsay, I'm sure many would agree with it.

What we can agree on is that parents aren't doing their duty in this day and age for whatever the reason may be case by case.

Get in touch with the librarians at the Vermont History Center in Barre. They have a searchable database of farm journals from the period you're looking at and LOVE to talk about them.

This is one from their collection in which a young man sketched out his fields and what was in them (in this case, grass for livestock grazing and other crops) and also wrote journal entries about his life.

Yeah you and the other guy commenting this same thing are the ones who didn’t get invited. I don’t see why else you’d make that connection and be so eager to share it.

Back in my day we’d get blackout in a neighbors hay barn while he had no idea we were in there. But no one drove and help was a scream away and our parents had no idea what we were doing, but I could also absolutely call for a ride if need be. From what I’ve heard about this situation and about a lot of these high school parties nowadays is that they are quite brazen, often sponsored by parents who don’t give a fuck, and result in a lot of kids drunk driving. I’m all for kids doing their thing and being kids - until they hop in the car or just start to get to take it too far in general. And definitely against parents who think they’re above the law when it comes to something like this.

Like many other parents in this thread - I think a healthy dose of both fear and careful rebellion is good for kids. And I see those two things not being reinforced in this day and age.

No worries! Sorry to be so negative. Honestly if you can carve out a life here it’s totally worth it, but it takes persistence.

I work in conservation myself so you’re in good company. There are plenty of police officer/game warden jobs open across the state and lots of nature reserves as well! Check the local land trusts for listings and the state job lists as well. State gigs don’t pay well but the benefits are solid.

Like others have said here the state has a strong sense of community, decent schools, delicious local food and beer, and largely progressive values but also a solid hunting and fishing culture as well. Not sure what you fish for out in MO but some good spots for pike, large/small mouth bass, trout (mostly stocked) and more. You can hunt turkey, deer, duck, etc but there’s some controversy around trapping right now. Interestingly if you don’t post signs on your land then others can hunt on it as well.

The winters are long but if you bundle up and find some hobbies to occupy your time they’re not so bad. Summers are mild ish and just plain beautiful. Fall will blow your mind when the trees change color. Spring is a giant muddy mess but a lot of us are riding that post-winter high anyway.

AGood luck!

Location/hydrology dependent for sure.

I would take nothing over my natural spring water source. I have nothing but natural forest uphill from my property and the aquifer is high quality. We also have a 600ft well for a backup that provides water loaded with iron, would take most town water over that any day. I would feel differently about using a spring if I lived near an old gas station, large farm, or had a lot of neighbors.

This was a huge problem when I lived in Westminster west. The yearly winter power outages made it so we couldn’t drink, couldn’t shower, couldn’t flush, and refilling our huge jugs was too much of a PITA. That’s why I moved closer to town! And Putney and Bratts town water isn’t actually bad at all in my opinion. Florida town water though, where my mom lives….ughhhh taste like you’re drinking canned water. You know that bad can taste? It has that.
