Check out “Witch windows.” It’s a very Vermont specific thing in old houses from the 1800s to mid 1900s (sometimes new construction for the look) that would be a perfect touch for a Vermont farm game. Please update on progress! I’d love to check it out when complete. Best of luck.

Ggdaughter of illegal Canadian bootlegers here. When they weren’t running, ggpa was logging and winning bets at bars. My ggma was indigenous and fighting the good fight at home.

There are plenty of Vermonters still alive that remember growing up on farms in the 1930s. If you’d like to collect some oral histories, call around to a few assisted living facilities and ask to speak to their social activities coordinator. They’re often scrambling to find activities for residents and I’m sure you’ll find more than one that will help put together a round table discussion on growing up in Vermont.

What should they have done with them, in your opinion?

Beware of the PFAs (forever chemicals) in town water. Well water might not have as many.

Maybe check out Great Depression cookbooks. People had to scrape by with whatever they could get... unique Depression era recipes would be cool.

Do better than what? The article is clear that this was a complete surprise to state officials and they’re rapidly trying to figure out a plan. Can you not judge that plan when it still hasn’t been formulated?

I think you’d avoid creating new lines. See what you can serve with existing rail ROW, and if some resort investor wants to bring it to Stowe, then you could think about what the best alignment is. Generally you want to avoid going through towns, because eminent domain is expensive

I think you could justify running extended Empire Corridor train per day past Okemo in the winter, if it wasn’t too expensive to upgrade the tracks. Definitely a limited amount of people to use it and it’s a small resort. But maybe it would grow with a promise of rail service.

I want fluoride in my water, but also want water if town isn’t working.

I’m a social worker, and I had a 12 yr old kid I was working with that day. I had the special glasses for him to wear, and got to see his face when he first looked up. His reaction was priceless.

Smugglers's Notch got its name from Boottleggers running booze during prohibition. There is a rough side to the culture that history tends to forget. Like, Ethan Allen wasn't a star citizen and backwoods justice was and is a real thing.

Grew up with a spring fed gravity water system. Awesome, pure, free water source, but had to maintain the water mains and cisterns (pain in the ass). Rented a place with a well that had hard water with high clay content (even worse pain in the ass. With nasty tasting water that left stains in the bathroom). Now on town water with no meter and delicious pure water sourced from high up near the national forest. Downside is it costs $800 a year. If you have the option I would hook into municipal water.
