The dog cops are everywhere. License or prepare to be in the slammer. In reality I don't know anyone who has gotten in trouble for failure to license.

If a non-registered dog gets picked up wandering loose and being a nuisance by animal control, the dog goes to a veterinarian or whomever your town contracts to hold the dog. The owner is responsible for paying fees to get the dog released only after showing proof of registration. So instead of just paying $9 the bill could be double or triple digits. Seems an easy answer….just get your dog registered in your town.

Although to add on we only need 2 max more at the moment. Going for five family but don't have enough hens for more than that. And I'll add on that we are trying for cold hardy, so mixes with big combs are out. Roo will have a good few years, then go humanely for meat. He will father babies and enjoy his flock and enrichment. No aggressive roos, please, we have 3 very good boys right now and while they will be separated I don't want to breed aggression into the flock.

Edit to add: hi mom.

You could see if anyone around you is looking for roosters. If you're near Wardsboro, we're looking for Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, Ameraucanas, and buff or dark Brahmas. We're planning on breeding for meat and eggs, and as luck would have it, we have too few roosters.

You should visit the area during mud season and/or stick season to get an idea of how bucolic our state can be.

Oh, well, never mind (in Emily Latella voice)

Winters' not as bad past 5-6 years as was past 10-20; less need for front-end loaders in driveway moving snowbanks back. Get a snowblower if able. All seasons on AWD, snows on FWD work so long as you're not in the storm proper.

Food, lots to buy from farms nextdoor (milk, eggs, beef/pork) supermarkets for the usual, farmers' markets for nicer/organics.

VT coffee roasters is avail at every gas/convenience store in 802, GMroasters is great! That should answer your ?'s

But you don't know what you don't know, so enjoy surfing on the learning curve!

I believe the season you’re looking for here is “winter”. It’s very local Vermont lingo so I get why it may seem a little foreign. Welcome!

Fun fact: you can donate unwanted chickens/roosters to VINS in quechee. Call ahead and arrange a time for drop off. All donated birds are given a gas, frozen and then fed to the rehabilitated birds that are not able to hunt for themselves.

I hope this helps!

Oh no, DINKs here 🙌 I just want some advice on how do deal when the snow/mud hits and how bad it gets, where to shop for groceries, meat, good coffee, all of that. We're pretty chill 😊

Thanks for everything!

If you have kids, they'll likely hate you for it; unless you are coming from a very rural place already. Over 1/2 the kids can't wait to hit +18 and leave the State; and they're living in even more desirable areas. Lots of the rest, specially in NEK are quiverfull's, home schooled, and very cloistered.

If you're DINKS, and can WFH, then congrats; your only challenge will be fitting into the community, which is also pretty clannish.

Not much to add re: Newport/Lowell/Derby.... assuming you've been there and scoped it out. Not terribly unlike rural 802 anywhere; but you may want to consider Montgomery (Center) or even Lowell.

Rabies tags don’t mean too much anyway. You can buy packs of them on Amazon.

Edit for the downvotes: I DON’T DO THIS. I’m a dog groomer and it’s the reason I require people to bring paperwork. Rabies vaccines are required by law and usually the only one groomers require, but people still try to bring old tags, swap tags with other dogs, or buy tags instead of just taking their dog to the damn vet.

It’s good to do in case your dog gets loose so they know where the dog belongs even if you don’t pick up the phone number listed with their tags/microchip. I got fined $100 once in shelburne when my dog got without being licensed
