I’ve lived in several countries and 3 states in the US, and I’ve noticed that people tend to not appreciate where they were born and raised. They often can’t understand why someone should CHOOSE to live there. I think that is the most common when people aren’t unhappy and think the solution would be to live somewhere else. When I left the US, I thought the entire country was horrible. I wanted OUT. It took me a few years away to gain a different perspective on things. I began to see that all places have their issues and the US had a lot of positives that I had not appreciated before.

All of that is just to say you should ignore the people who are unhappy here in VT. If you like multiple aspects, go for it. Find your people. You will have to work for it, but it will pay off. Some aspects of living here are harder than in other parts of the US, but some are much easier. It depends on your priorities and outlook.

Now, the issue with people saying to stay out because there isn’t housing and you don’t belong….those aren’t your people. Ignore the chatter. If you succeed in starting a business and get involved in the community, you are contributing. They are looking for someone to blame when the issues in this state are far more complex and have been building for years.

That store voted to unionize and then all the employee leaders quit for other jobs. The DM had it in for the store manager and eventually fired her for failing to prevent the union vote (though blamed it on failure to staff the store - a store no one wants to work at because the pay is less than other stores that didn't unionize).

As it stands, none of the current employees are stepping up to start talks so it was a big fucking bust that cost a bunch of people their jobs. Now that store has none of the recent raises that the other stores have, and there's no way they're getting any union benefits within the next two years because they can't get anyone to head the talks with Starbucks - not that Starbucks has agreed with ANY store in the US to give union contracts.

The best thing that can happen to that lpcation is it shuts down.

Just sell it to your spouse for a dollar and have them register and tell the DMV to go fuck themselves with their hoops. Wish I'd have known about that loophole before they robbed me for $900 in sales tax for a truck I already paid sales tax on twice in North Carolina (once at lease start and once at lease buyout).

Other things the DMV in VT has done:

  • Marked the wrong sex on my license
  • Mailed me a registration sticker with no sticker in it
  • Made me sit in a crowded room 4 hours past my appointment for something that is done online everywhere else

I never fully appreciated the DMV hatred trope depicted in movies and shows until I moved to Vermont.

Are you sure about it being illegal? It’s illegal in the UK. But I’ve not heard of it being illegal (to remove) anywhere in the us. Don’t get me wrong …would be great to see it’s status changed in the US… but I don’t believe we’re there. Regardless … it’s the WORST!

Make a copy of that google info, return to the VT DMV, show it to them and ask to speak to a supervisor if you again are rejected. If the supervisor also rejects you, the ask to speak with THEIR superior. Keep working your way up the food chain until you get to someone who has at least half a brain.

We’re at roughly the same ratio and they seem (mostly) fine. One hen has been harassed on and off by the others but nothing crazy, and only seems to happen during the winter when they’re a little more hemmed in. Now that the snow is largely melted, they’re fine.
