North Bennington strategically crafted its way into the choice/tuition system a few years back. Removed themselves from the public school system, shut down the elementary school and turned it independent, and gave residents the option to spend 17k on any school they want. Most of the kids are now in private/independent schools.

I’m in Bennington County in a supervisory union that has designated public schools depending on what town/neighborhood you live in. Move one town over into a place like Manchester, Dorset, or Winhall, and you get the option to use your $17k education tax on any school you want.

Tell me how that’s fair to some section 8 kid forced into Bennington public schools vs one in Winhall who can choose among a half dozen local private schools, a couple public schools, and even the option of an out of state boarding school.

Sure as shit, I want to move into one of those towns as my kids enter middle/high school. But damn, if you don’t have the means to pay into the high real estate of the Manchester area, you’re stuck with the public option.

If you can’t offer this option to every Vermont student, it shouldn’t be offered to those in specific towns.

As someone with a second home in Vermont, I agree - raise my taxes. If you can’t afford a small increase in taxes on a second home, don’t buy one. If you’re going to spend your money on one, it also benefits you to ensure the local economy prospers, and that means supporting local workers and businesses. Deal with it.

There are more apartments but it’s not affordable. There’s a very large new development underway but given the cost of new housing I’m sure the rent will be market rate. Why would a private developer opt to lose profits? Makes no business sense.

The local affordable housing organization purchased 25 of the new apartments with a few million in grant money, which will add to the affordable housing pool but we need more. Here’s a link to one of the larger rental companies if you want an idea of what’s available on the open market https://gmmvt.squarespace.com.

We need to fix rental laws that let freeloaders not pay from October til May because of non-eviction rules.

We need to stop Act 250 from overreaching into areas not included in the law. The Board has, according to it's statute, no authority in a town with sewers, water and a zoning plan. Now, every plan is subject to 250.

We need to allow in-law apartments to be rented to non-family members.

We need to deregulate housing

It’s almost like making a building dedicated solely to the poor, instead of mixed income, is a bad idea 🧐

Especially so if you don’t pair it with wrap around services - With law enforcement on site, mental health providers nearby, and employment services close by as well.

Boule Bakery is a must for pastries and coffee. Cosmic Cup is a good lunch spot. Haven is a nice vintage furniture store and there is a decent bookstore. Whirligig does have some cans to go but not nearly the selection they have on tap. Littleton is a little more happening… but if you’re looking for a whole day or most of it, I highly recommend Montpelier. It’s an hour away, a really easy drive down 2 and is a great spot to spend a whole day.
