The Smartless guys (Sean Hayes, Will Arnett, Jason Bateman) just released an episode of their podcast with Brenden. (It was available w/subscription last week.) There was a some talk about the “quiet” part of Brendan’s career before his recent resurgence. Take a listen!!

The real problem was that he never got a chance to really show his range after he was blacklisted by Hollywood. Now he's finally getting that chance.

I loved Journey to the Center of the Earth from 2008. It was just a good family movie. The ending made me excited for a sequel, but it sucked seeing Dwayne Johnson being the star and Brendan Fraser not being involved in Journey 2.

He's got better taste than being involved in a FaF "movie."

I'm very happy to see Brendan Fraser get acknowledgement for his work now and the continued public support but it's doesn't sit well with me that these acknowledgements are coming from the initiations and industry that turned their back on him and so many others that were victims of predatory people in power. Most face no consequences and stay ultra wealthy.

In an industry filled with so much narcissism and vanity, Brendan Fraser is such a wholesome person. It's really a breath of fresh air.

This is getting ridiculous reddit. I feel like I'm on week 6 of "Brendan Fraser and everything everywhere all at once win an award yippee!".
How much more congratulations can they fucking get

Brendan Fraser was pretty huge at his peak. The bigger reason is more likely all his injuries and family situation that resulted in him taking fewer less demanding roles/more time off and the fact that there wasn't really any long running series for him to be a part of like the MCU at the time. He 100% would have been a title character in the MCU if it were around at the time.
Like his run from 99-03 is about as good as most actors can hope for without scoring a strong oscar candidate.

Fair point! I was neglecting how much the industry itself has changed. I agree with your take.

The Mummy was old school successful with 400 million box office plus whatever DVD and VHS sales/rentals were (this was the first DVD of like half of my friends). With inflation, that's 600 million dollar box office which is mediocre in this era of billion dollar franchises. What I was saying is he would easily be leading a billion dollar franchise if he was a 30 year old in 2023. He would be Chris Pratt or upper billing of fast and furious or something.

you adapt a play because of the script, because you have to basically change everything else. And a good script, for a play I mean, usually has to be strong enough that it stands on its own, you're gonna have different directors, actors etc. A good playwright knows this and writes something that can speak for itself.
It's obviously not a science, but when a great director like aronofsky spends this much time and energy on adapting a script from stage to screen, yeah, I kinda have high expectations
>Do you watch a lot of plays?
nah, theatre is gay
I'm kidding, but I actually don't watch a lot of plays anymore

That seems to imply that The Mummy was unsuccessful at the time. I don't believe it was. Fraser's "humor and looks" did give him a big career. Then other shit happened.

You're right, Fraser was ahead of his time. He'd be Hollywood's favourite leading man if he'd gotten into the business more recently.

It'd be a story where over the last 35 years inceno man has completely normalized in modern society, becomes a successful actor, falls from the spotlight only to return and win a Grammy which then allows one of his old movies to be green lit for a sequel. I'd watch that.

Do you watch a lot of plays? I always think movies from walk a treacherous path, dialogue for the state is written for projection, cinema is telegraphic- it brings the faraway close-up. Certainly, I would not expect an adaptation to have a great script... Too much has to change, one way or the other.

He was fantastic in The Whale. I was never a fan of his until this movie, having only seen him in action roles.
