Things created by DARPA - the R&D branch of the US military:

  • the building blocks of GPS
  • the 1st computer mouse and Graphical user interface (GUI)
  • the protocols that underpin the modern Internet
  • Onion routing / Tor network - used by dissidents and journalists to circumvent censorship
  • The mRNA platform used in the world's leading Covid-19 vaccines (and potentially 1st vaccines against Cancer)

If a single mistake is made (that is, if a letter is slightly malformed), it can't be erased. Instead, the entire page is discarded.

Therefore, in order to avoid discarding large swatches of text due to a single minor error, it's written on small sheets then stiched together afterwards.

It's a full time job for a whole year by a specially trained person to make one of these. Naturally it's going to cost tens of thousands of dollars.

At the risk of being branded a commie, this is what happens when countries progressively privatise higher education. The institutions stray more away from what's best for students and just chase the $$. My father was a university professor before he retired and he lamented that this even applied to research which were increasingly becoming less theoretical and more designed to achieve short term practical application, which is short sighted because it's the more theoretical research that churns out the bigger leaps in scientific understanding in the long term.

Its like reddit thinks nothing outside of America exists and American politics is the only thing that exists so its the same thing everywhere.

Telling an American their political opinion would be seen as conservative or far right in another country will make them short circuit too.

It would be fun to do if it wasn't every thread.

The USA has other allies that produce oil. It will be a domestic issue but they would not run out because of it. Plus the potential for explosive profits due to war time issues would mean a lot of non-opec nations would be happy to ship whatever oil they don't need for a quick buck.

But I think your premise is wrong, Finland will always have the support of Sweden, no matter what. For starters, both are in the EU, which has a mutual defense pact. Also, I don't know if those two (or the Nordic countries) have a bilateral defense treaty, but they could and they should. NATO is not exclusive to other military alliances. If the US were attacked, you can be sure Australia would help them however they could, and the US shares as much intelligence (five eyes) with them as they want.
