So we're worried about a proxy war with Russia in Syria might turn into ww3 but we're fighting a proxy war in Ukraine against Russia with NATO and top western weapons?

Israel doesn't want to piss off Russia, that has strong to trade relations with its enemies I get it.

But the same is historically true for Europe and the US.

The west has helped Israel through it's entire history, at some point they have to get off the fence.

>I believe it was proposed that athelets could participate so long as they did not support the war.

It's very hard to understand what word "support the war means". Lets look at the example. I am Ivan and I don't support war. And my neighbor vlad supports war and even tatooed big fat letter Z on his left arm. I work for respectible company and I publically say that I don't support war (in fac I do not support war, I strongly believe it could have been avoided). However I pay more in taxes per month then some people make in a year and my friend Vlad, who wears big Z don't even have a job. Now suddenly despite whatever I say or state I am actually very tangibly support war with actual money, where my friend is just a dead weight. Support is relative. And wearing certain flag has nothing to do it.

>I think those first athletes who broke the rules about political statements and ended up banned have eroded any faith in Olympic participants abiding by the rule.

Those who make political statements at the games should be banned. But you can't judge those who did nothing wrong based on the feeling of "errosion". That's my point of view.

Also kind of hard for even genuine dialogue between the governments to resolve things when the Palestinian governments don't really have any legitimacy, Abbas is 18 years into a 4 year term as president and refuses to hold elections, and Hamas rules Gaza as a weird quasi-government in exile despite winning the most recent Palestinian elections.

>You're mixing up what's happening and what you find justifiable.

The issue is that you are the one mixing things up. Your presenting Ukraine and Russia as equally being able to stop the war. But stopping the war for Ukraine would mean losing their sovereignty, while stopping the war for Russia would have no impact on their sovereignty.

>If your plan is to keep telling Putin to end the war - it doesn't seem very productive.

We can keep telling Putin that while we send military aid to Ukraine and sanctioning Russia, if Ukraine keeps being successful then Putin is more likely to listen.

>Escalating that can make things less popular, and make the war seem more necessary from the Russian perspective.

Support for sending troops to Ukraine was around 35-40% at the start of the war. It seems pretty obvious that main reason NATO troops aren't in Ukraine are due to Russia's nuclear weapons (as noted here and here).

Doesn't this also show Putin that NATO doesn't want to attack Russia, since this would be the perfect opportunity to perform such an attack?

>They probably made a calculation that the risk is low enough.

You hit the nail on the head. The risk of conflict escalation is low when sending aid, because NATO is not directly involved. Sending troops to Ukraine would massively escalate the conflict, as pointed out by the Biden admin.

Guess so but there’s still more to it. Israel is diplomatically restrained from helping due to Russia’s dominance over Syria. As we’ve seen, the vibe on the ground is changing regarding Israel helping Ukraine but still they’re avoiding full weapon systems.

Nothing should justify letting Russia invade Ukraine but rather there are decisive actions that would escalate warfare.

Role play: Israel sends dope ass weapons to Ukraine Russia stops allowing Israel to destroy weapons shipments bound for Lebanon/Gaza Israel may declare war on Iran or push further into Syria to guarantee security The US provides military aid to Israel will lead to direct confrontations of the US and Russian army

aaaaand World War I’m not saying this is how it must go down, but a reasonable guess of why Israel is in a bind with Russia.

Their "dissuasion commissions" made up of lawyers and social workers do not have the power to mandate compulsory treatment. They either recommend treatment or community service for addicts and if they refuse the commission can issue a sanction such a fine or taking away personal possessions.

Authorities can't forcibly drag addicts into treatment but once they voluntarily consent to treatment they have conditions for release, you can't just check yourself out any time if you have a history of overdosing. Apparently 85% of their addicts voluntarily agree to treatment when asked to by a dissuasion commission.
