I think in some places there are actually groups of armed people that defend these animals from poaching.

It must be a nightmare for Ukraine to sort out and actually use all this military aid.
I mean a lot of it is NATO standard which probably helps. But some of it is not.

I see your point. Personally, I wouldn't see Ivan as suporting the war, just suporting his family to get by. I'm sure if there was a means, he would probably have gotten them all away from a government he doesn't support. But life isn't so easy. Unfortunately, I think Ivan may also be a minority but wish him luck. Vlad sounds like a bit of a knob though.

Energy cost goes down, grid cost goes way up.
But if your country has a failing grid, they gotta rebuild it anyway.

They do not pay for themselves ever if you include all the externalities which currently are conveniently paid for by society. Nuclear power is a taxpayer scam where profits are privatized and costs are socialized.
>You need to generate four times as much energy if you are going to store it
Renewables are much cheaper power generators. Nuclear power costs about 5 times more than onshore wind power per kWh. Nuclear takes 5 to 17 years longer between planning and operation and produces on average 23 times the emissions per unit electricity generated.
So if you want to generate lots of energy for storage, you would be a fool to go for nuclear rather than renewables, even from a purely economical perspective.
And I rather have no electricity at all than nuclear power.

I believe a lot of countries are using the aid to Ukraine also as a way to offload dated or overstocked equipment. Essentially, the donation to Ukraine is a good excuse to replace them with newer systems.
For example, Germany is in the process of replacing its Marders with a new IFV called the Puma. Hence why they are willing to donate the Marders.
Similarly, the French last year were looking to update the Caesar platform. Instead of retrofitting the existing systems, they are now probably donating (most of) them to Ukraine and just ordering the upgraded version new.
As such, I wouldn’t expect any country to ask for its donated systems back. They will be worn out and already replaced. Doesn’t really make sense to keep a stockpile of worn and outdated stuff.

TBF it isn't something NATO likes to talk about too much, and most redditers didn't grow up during the cold war, so it's understandable that they would be surprised to learn this.

Yes, things have changed quickly. The world is picking sides, but some are taking a "wait and see" approach, some are playing both sides. But the actions of a country define it. I hope Israel is able to join the "western world".
