This sounds like a case of a prophecy coming true because you believe it will. I bet if the stupid fortune teller hadn't said anything, everyone woulda been fine. He only even NOTICED the stray cat, I bet, BECAUSE of the 'prophecy'. And finding love? Come on, that's just a coincidence! I bet he'd count it if he found a heart-shaped object somewhere!

Reply to [WP] You show up to a police station saying that you want to confess a murder. Once you are in the interrogation room with a very grumpy cop, you say that you didn't kill anybody, but a prophecy said that you will. by Scafista_T-J
Cop rolls his eyes, clearly unamused. "Kid, this is the real world, not some superhero film or 'chosen one' series. Gonna let you go."
"NO!" I shout in response. "Listen, this isn't an ordinary situation. Please, I beg you, just listen."
Cop grunts, annoyed, but nods slowly.
I know words won't convince him. So I have to show him. "Everyone's heard the stories. Demon children born to human parents. My family are very superstitious, so when I went from 'sweet innocent kid' to 'little terror', they took me to see someone."
Cop scoffs at me. "And, what, you're a demon child? Get real."
"I thought the same way, officer" I state. "I can be horrible sometimes, but a demon? Then... something happened..."
Cop raises an eyebrow. I take a deep breath and continue. "Some jerk stole from me while I was out. I ran after him and attempted to corner him. He drew a knife, then suddenly cowered... 'PLEASE! SPARE ME! I'M SORRY! I HAD NO IDEA-' I had to cut him off. Demanded to know what he was talking about. He just pointed at my hands. They were claws. I had CLAWS, sir! And I suddenly realised... I almost killed him, for being a thief... told the guy about me being seen as a child, and how I never believed it... I asked if it was my fate to be a monster, to kill without mercy..." I let my mind take control, and my hands suddenly have claws, not nails.
The officer almost falls backwards off his chair in surprise. "He said yes. So I came here. I don't even care if I LOOK like a demon, but if I can't control myself-" suddenly, I notice that I have the officer, pinned to the wall, by the neck. I fight against myself to let him go.
Another officer enters the room. "We all tried to tell you, sir, that demons are real. Normally they just try to find where hell is, but seems like he's not interested."
I nod. "That's right, I'm not. I just don't wanna hurt anyone."
"Already called the specialists for this." The new officer pulls out a gun. Somehow, I'm repulsed by it. Must be holy in some way. "Just wait."
"I want to ask something..." I begin tearing up. "My parents are good people. Why am I a demon?"
"They'd either be demons themselves or were cursed by a demon. Seems like for your parents, it was the latter."
"That's why they wouldn't have more children..." I mutter to myself, just as a group of people arrive.
Light-infused armour. Holy daggers. Enchanted chains. I gulp. I feel my demon side trying to force its way out, rear its ugly head. I feel the urge, the need, to flee, to run, to get away, however I can.
"SHOOT ME!" I yell at the officer, afraid I can't control it. I feel a sting like nothing I've ever felt before. Then, I black out.

I wake up. I'm in a small room, lying on a soft bed. Looking around, everything is red. I also spot a camera. As I sit up, I look at my hands. They're transformed. I look in a full-length mirror. Some of my body has morphed into being demonic.
The door to my room opens. The person is wearing something on their neck. It feels powerful. "Where am I?"
"In our Demon Containment Facility. Follow me." He attaches a lead of some sort to the chain on my wrists, and gently tugs it. I follow, the sound of metal clinking on the chains of my ankles as well as my wrists. On instinct, I let out a breath of fire. He holds the pendant on his neck up, and it absorbs the fire.
We down down several corridors, before I'm taken to an area with demons in cells. Every single one is chained down, every door is infused with holy magic. I squirm, but there's no running.
I'm put into a cell. I beg them to give me zero chance of escape, I don't trust myself. Once I'm settled in and tightly chained inside the cell my enchanted cuffs, I relax on the bed, relieved and satisfied.
"Such an insult... keeping you caged like an animal..." I look around, and see a demon, on the other side. "I'd free you, but I'm not powerful enough... yet."
"I'm more free in here than as a mindless creature of evil" I spit.
"I'm sure you'll come around." He flicks his wrist. Something appears inside my cell.
I pick it up. "What's this?"
"It'll vibrate when I command it to. When it vibrates, that'll signal your one and only chance to escape." The demon leaves.
Part of me is excited, but the other part is terrified. I don't want to leave... but it may not be my choice...

"DAAAAAAAAAAD!" Ian runs up excitedly to his father, who gives his hair a good ruffle.
"Hey, kiddo! It's good to see you!" the dad says, smiling warmly.
Ian lets go of his father. "We gonna play games? Watch films? I miss you!"
"I miss you a lot too, ya rascal. Now, wait inside the car, I need to talk to Mrs. Leaves. I won't be long." The father opens the door for Ian, and when he's in shuts it. He looks at me and walks over. "Hey, Airlight" he says. "Didn't realise you were teaching my son. Does he give you trouble?"
"He's such a sweetheart actually. How did he come from YOU, Darkshade?" I smirk, and he chuckles.
"Yeah, I guess I don't leave you with a great impression." His face falls.
I soften my look. Something is clearly going on. "Does Ian know? Your wife?"
Darkshade glares at me. "Maria's gone. Remember when I was silent for a few years? That was thanks to her. She made me better. When she was killed, however... I don't know, I snapped. Ian was only three months old. I didn't know what to do. Happy now?"
I shake my head. "Not in the slightest. So with just you raising Ian..."
"I know what you're thinking. My day job and nightly crime sprees keep me so busy my neighbour watches Ian constantly. I tell her it's because I have a 'night job'." He looks away.
I raise an eyebrow. "Night job, huh? You're a murderer."
"I know" Darkshade growls. "My former buddies told me they'd pay well, and they do."
It all clicks in that one moment. "You're a grieving man raising a child by yourself who used to be a villain. You're broken."
In that moment, Darkshade collapses. "When I met her, I told myself I'd NEVER go back to my old life. She knew EVERYTHING about me, yet CHOSE to be with me! What would she think of me?"
"Why didn't you tell me anything?" I ask gently.
"I was afraid, but more than that, I didn't want you to know I was dead. I'm basically nothing now..." He stares at the ground, tears streaming down his face.
A little hand touches his shoulder. "Dad? Why are you crying?"
I blink. I have no clue what to do... I have to fulfil my duty to the citizens... but I can't tear apart an already broken family...
An idea forms in my head. "He confessed to me that he only had time today literally just to pick you up. His job is sending him on a work trip, he doesn't know how long he'll be gone for, but he doesn't want to abandon you."
Darkshade looks at me, and I give him a wink. Ian seems sad, but nods. "Ok..." he looks at Darkshade. "Dad, it's ok, I know your job is important. I'll be fine."
He looks at his son, and gives him a big hug. "I'm sorry. I promise things won't be like this forever. You can stay at Mrs. Leave's place for now."
My eyes widen. "I'll check with the principal..." I whip my phone out. I'm NOT getting fired! I mean, I'll help Ian, but I won't have a bad reputation involving children, of all things! As I confer with my boss, I overhear Darkshade and Ian talking. I get the all-clear from the principal and tell Ian to wait at the school entrance for me. I look at Darkshade. "Ok, you know full-well I didn't cover for you just because I feel sorry for you. You're getting help. Go to Starshine Mental Institution, they have a good reputation for helping people not quite insane, normally the last step for someone recovering from difficulties. They'll refuse to take you in, tell them I sent you, I'll get a call and confirm with them. Just remember: you step out of line, they won't hesitate to throw your ass into maximum security. You'll never see your son again. Believe me when I say I don't want that."
Darkshade stands up and nods. "So for what purpose am I there instead of minimum security or something?"
I laugh. "You think ANYONE would trust you in MINIMUM SECURITY? Listen, you'll have therapists to talk to. It's a good place for a person to get their life together. I'll come by once a week, ok?" I smile reassuringly.
Darkshade sighs. "Ok. But if anyone asks, I was captured and deemed insane. Only us and the people at the institute are to know the truth. Keep Ian away from the news, he does like watching it but I can't risk him finding out what his father was... what he is..." he gets in his car and drives off.
I turn... and Ian is right behind me, a look of concern on his face. "I do really like the news..."
I bend down and hug him. "Ian, you weren't supposed to know..."
"I know, but I got bored. I'm sorry, Mrs. Leaves. But dad isn't a bad person, is he?" he stares at me with big eyes.
I look towards the road, and my phone rings. The institute. Dang, Darkshade was fast! But... he kept his promise...
I smile. "Not at all. Come on." I take Ian's hand as I answer the phone.

[Author's Note: I'd have happily played along with this as if I WERE Jaques, but I already did an 'edit' where I worked things out with my spouse, so...]
Really? One of my own did that? Jaques... if I knew who he was, I'd so go over and beat him up on your behalf! That sounds so abusive! I'm so sorry you went through that!
As I said in my edit, I had talked it out with my fiancé, I'm not a manipulative bastard. I truly and genuinely love her. I want what's best for her, and we'll do what we can to make the marriage work.
What really disgusts me is how tradition was used to keep you 'in line'. That's genuinely messed up. The reason I brought up tradition at all is, in my family, tradition is sacred, but I'd NEVER use it to CONTROL someone. I hope you find someone better, and please don't hate all our kind over one moronic psychopath.
Wish you luck!

EDIT:
I'm sorry I haven't replied to many of you, I went to sleep and then had a talk with my fiancé, I really didn't expect this to blow up!
A few of you are suggesting she was being selfish and that I should leave her. My family were actually suggesting the same thing, but I didn't want to be rash, I do love her.
Anyway, my family and I had a meeting with her and her family. It seems like there was a lot of misunderstanding on both sides. The book I gave her on vampire traditions kind of glossed over EVERYTHING, just giving basic descriptions without any detail. We had a proper discussion about her fears and worries, as well as vampire traditions.
She was worried about losing friends, not being able to eat garlic, and being awake at night (turns out she's scared of the dark, how cute!) My family have reservations about letting the marriage go forward, my family is strict on culture and tradition.
I managed to convince them that I love my fiancé too much, and said I'd rather become human for her than lose her, so we decided that, since I had worked really hard to live her family's lifestyle, in the few months leading up to the wedding she'll live mine and we'll see how she feels about living like a vampire.
Let's see how this goes. Wish me luck! (Oh, and to those who suggested I ditch her... don't leave your house at night...)

I did give her a book about vampiric traditions, but it appears she didn't read it or something? I will take responsibility for not making sure she knew.
She does have a few traditions that make me uncomfortable, including serving garlic during special meals, but I have done my best to participate. Frankly, if a tradition such as what you suggested exists, I'd wonder what she really thought about vampires...
Though saying that, I see how my tradition may imply how I feel about humans. I really don't want to lose her over this... I guess I should sit down and talk with her.
Thank you for the insight!
