I sit silent at the top of the stairs. It's morning, after both Scarlett and I slept in the same bed together, myself wrapped in her arms. She wanted to talk to her dad how she wants me to be with her forever, so she's gone down the stairs of her mansion, myself eavesdropping.

"Daddy!"

"Oh, hey sweetheart!" Her dad goes to hug her. "Did Gavin try to hurt you?"

"No, daddy. He actually told me that last night was the first night in a while that he hasn't had a nightmare! He feels safe with me!" Scarlett's voice drips with excitement.

Her dad sighs. "I have told you, time and again. Do. Not. Forget."

Scarlett looks down at the ground as she finishes his sentence presumably. "Humans are dangerous beasts that seek to destroy our kind."

"That's my girl!" He picks her up into a big hug. "Humans are good at putting on a front. They can pretend to accept us as much as they want, but it could all be a big lie."

"Then why the party?" Scarlett snaps back.

"Because one way or another, we're celebrating the sunset of a new era... whether that's humans accepting vampires or vampires eradicating humans, we are now free..."

"I think you're being too harsh, daddy. If anything, humans are small, weak and easy to manipulate! You really think they'd try fighting back?" Scarlett scoffs.

"Dumb ones might" I interject. "But ever since the news of vampires existing came out, they were found to be hiding everywhere, with several humans already knowing of their existence but choosing to keep it quiet. Most people will know that if vampires wanted to, we'd be gone already!"

Scarlett and her dad stare at me. Scarlett speaks first. "I thought I locked the door!"

"You did. I'm a pretty good lockpick. I know what your father thinks about humans, so when you said you were going to talk to him, I got scared..."

"And you're now fine? After hearing our chat?" The dad raises an eyebrow.

"Depends. Are you willing to give humans a chance? Nothing good will come out of you attacking them, I promise." I look directly into his eyes.

He shakes his head. "I lost my wife to a human... it's hard for me to trust your kind..."

"People will kill other people. They'll abuse animals and children. Women are sometimes violated. Humans as a species are just bad. It's not personal."

The vampire chuckles. "That's a strange way to try and convince me to trust your kind. Telling me that you're all just monsters. I'd assume you're not an 'evil human'?"

"Cross my heart. What can I do to prove it?" I look at him hopefully.

He walks over to a door in the wall and opens it, revealing all sorts of 'anti-human gear'. He pulls out what looks like a chastity belt, as well as what looks like some sort of blood-pressure pump? "What do you think of my daughter?"

"Oh, she's lovely and sweet... though possessive..."

"Eh, don't take that to heart, you're probably the first human who she's been able to get near while they knew she was there. I never understood her obsession with humans, but she often told me the first human male to trust her would belong to her. On that note, I'm giving you a choice: you leave my mansion and never come near me or my daughter again, or you're my daughter's mate for life. Make your choice."

I look at the belt and pressure pump on the ground. I notice Scarlett trying to contain her excitement as she holds the potion that would allow me to live forever. I contemplate my options.

"I... I want to get to know your daughter more before I make any decisions..."

The dad smirks. "Right, humans 'date', don't they? Around here vampires just all know each other... regardless, you like my daughter, she's already attached to you... why do you insist on waiting?"

"What if I say 'yes' and it turns out we don't get along as 'mates'?" I fire back. Risky, but I have to try something.

He strokes his chin. "You're living with Grit's family currently, aren't you?" I nod. "If I give you time, you won't leave?"

I realise I had never thought about if I want to go back to the city. I dismiss the thought quickly. "No, I won't leave town."

"Good. I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot more of my daughter." He winks at me.

"So it's common for vampires to just send out mass invitations to parties?" I query as Grit, Terror and I are ushered into the largest, fanciest mansion I've ever seen.

"Yeah, kind of. Most of the time other vampires outside friends and family just hear about parties - everyone knows everyone type thing - and we tend to be quite welcoming so if you show up, you're allowed in."

"This is a bit different though" Terror remarks. "This time, every vampire really was invited, as a celebration of no longer having to live in the shadows of humanity. You made that happen, Gavin, so you were invited too."

I blush. "Just trying to make sure people know the truth... too bad Curd didn't want to come."

"Yeah, Scaria is too hyper for more 'formal' events and Curd isn't a fan of parties with no pranks involved" Gavin chuckles. "Course that means my mum has to stay at home."

"Oh, she doesn't mind" Terror smiles. "Pale just wants to look after her family!"

We enter and begin chatting away, enjoying the vibes and the music, when a female vampire around my age rushes up. "THERE YOU ARE! I was worried you didn't make it! I really wanted to meet you!"

Grit comes over. "Sorry, Scarlett, Gavin has a girlfriend."

Before I can process what just happened, Scarlett puts her hands on her hips. "Hey, sweetheart, this is between me and him!"

"Why'd you lie anyway?" I add.

Grit grabs my arm. "Because Scarlett is vicious! She doesn't care-"

"THIS again." Scarlett rolls her eyes. "Grit found out I had been biting and turning people who were criminals. I'm talking pedo's, murderers and grave robbers, as well as other 'unsavoury' types, and he thinks I'm horrible."

I cock an eyebrow in curiosity. "Every been tracked down by the Vampire Hunter's Guild?"

Her eyes light up. "This is EXACTLY what I was trying to tell Grit! They caught me as I was saving a young girl, questioned me, and let me go!"

Grit grunts. "They wouldn't."

"Actually" I chime in, "they would. I did a lot of research on them. They only kill vampires if they find there wasn't sufficient reason for turning people. In fact, the guild has an official position with the police so they can take care of VAMPIRE criminals, and the police AGREE that vampires can be released with a warning!"

"Yeah... I got a call to go back in, being told I can't do it anymore... and I've respected that decision." Scarlett grins.

Grit tuts and walks away. She kisses me. "Thanks for that, cutie!"

I blush again. "That's... no problem..."

"Can I be honest? I could NEVER express this before because of obvious reasons, but... I've always wanted to have a human for a partner..."

"And you want that human to be me?" I ask.

"Only if you're willing. I can give you a formula which will alter your biology and allow you to live forever!"

"Wouldn't I basically be a vampire?" I joke.

Scarlett laughs. "Oh, you're funny! No, you'd still be human. You wouldn't crave blood, and, more importantly..." she puts her chin onto my shoulder, breathing deeply. "I can still feed on you!"

I get nervous, but before I can say or do anything, there's a loud noise. Everyone turns to see a man in a black outfit, a sack slung over his shoulder. He looks around, expression slowly turning into fear. "CRAP!" He attempts to jump back out the window.

Terror has already grasped his jumper. He tears himself out of it and makes a run for the front door, realising there are vampires there, too. He sees another window and goes to break it.

Scarlett grabs his arm and shoves him back onto the floor. "PLEASE DON'T HURT ME!" he begs.

Scarlett bends down. "You have three choices, upgraded from two. Firstly, I can turn you, making you one of us and giving you immortality. Secondly, I can make you my new pet and I can provide you with all the comforts you can ask for. Thirdly, you can wait in this building for the police to show up and take you to prison, where you'll be back among humans. I'm NOT patient, and I'm hungry. Make your choice, or I'll just make it FOR you."

The man scrambles for his phone, quickly calling a number. "HELP! I'm being threatened by a vampire! Just come to-"

As the man makes a desperate plea for help, Grit comes up behind me. "Still think she's innocent?"

I look at the side of her head that's facing me. Her eyes are sparkling with determination, her gaze is firm and piercing, her mouth hungry and eager.

I look back at Grit. "She's just dealing with a criminal. She's not in the wrong here. Also... I like her fire and spark."

I ended up working for half a day. My boss wants me to get settled into my new home, everything has already been organised. All I need to do is follow the succubus, Temptress, home.

I take a deep breath as I step out of the hotel, knowing my life will NEVER be the same again. "Hey, Myers" Temptress purrs, licking her lips.

I gulp, I can feel myself going red. "H... hi..."

She laughs and grabs my hand. "Don't be so nervous! You're mine now! I'll take good care of you!" She begins pulling me away towards her home, hidden within the nearby forest.

Every magical creature lives within the forest, houses dotted here and there. She opens the door and drags me inside. She bolts the door shut, instantly stripping. "So... want to get to it?"

"Umm..." I have no clue how to respond, my eyes drawn to her exposed chest.

Temptress kisses my cheek. "How about some food first? I like my prey to have their energy."

I nod, food being what I wanted to ask for. She smiles warmly and heads to the kitchen. I just sit down in the armchair. After a short while of me trying to figure out what to do, she comes back through with a delicious-smelling stir fry. I muster up my courage. "You're a succubus. You're not just simply prepared for my arrival, are you?"

Temptress smirks. "Smart. You're right; all the ingredients I have are enchanted, designed to increase lust and cause my victim to relax. Makes it easier to feast."

I'm feeling nervous, but it's not like I have much choice. She seemed to notice, as her face falls. "Do you want to leave? I can smooth it over with Xorgo. I mean, normally I don't care, but also, normally, I make sure humans are comfortable enough before coming over."

"...I guess I'm just worried what will happen to me."

She sits on the arm of the chair, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry. When I satisfy myself, the human loses their soul, but I don't HAVE to take a person's soul, I can take your energy instead. It's not as 'filling' for me, but since you'll ALWAYS be here, I don't mind."

I look at her, she smiles reassuringly. I smile in return. "Ok, I trust you." I begin eating. It's very tasty. Before I know it, the plate is empty. I find myself looking at Temptress the same way she had been eyeing me. "Should we... head to the bedroom?" It was a half-conscious decision.

She stands up, grinning like a hungry predator. "Come on then" her sultry voice commands. I feel strong enough to resist. I have no reason to. I follow her through, and strip myself down. I get onto the bed, Temptress follows suit. She runs her finger from my shoulder down my arm, stopping at my hand and grabbing it. She does the same on the other side, then stretches both arms away from my body. She holds my arms down as she gives me several kisses. I feel my breath being taken away.

The last thing I remember before passing out is her beginning the main event...

THE NEXT DAY

I wake up exhausted, but I have work to get to. Temptress has a drink prepared for me, designed to increase energy and blood activity.

I arrive at work, and see my boss. "Good morning, Myers! You look a little worse for wear..."

"You can thank one of your best customers for that" I respond shyly.

"I figured. Did she treat you well?"

"Very, sir. She even had a cup of coffee prepared for this morning so I could come into work."

He slaps me on the shoulder. "Good lad. Now, why don't you get started for today?"

I nod, determined to prove to my boss, Temptress AND myself that I can do this. After all, my life's in a pretty good place!

I enter the hotel for my first day official day, having gone through a 'trial week'. I'm not naĂ¯ve, I know that I'm working with... 'interesting' clientele. Vampires would sniff me out, beastmen would try to scare me, demons would encourage me to make a deal with them. My favourite was a succubus who specifically requested I 'look after' her and attempted to get me to sell my body to her. I actually wanted to entertain her, but company policy is we don't get 'too personal' with guests, which I told her. She promised she'd meet me after work one day.

Anyway, none of this bothered me, I saw it as a challenge and a way to expand my knowledge of the world. I took everything in stride, and now I'm ready to start for real. I'm caught off-guard, however. A skeletal figure stands right in front of me. "Come to my office please, Myers." I follow the being.

I try to figure out what's happening, then it clicks: I was told that the boss is impatient and unkind, and as a human I'm in a lot of danger. Now, if it were just a skeleton, I would brush it off as hazing.

I enter the office first, taking a seat in the chair. I hear the door deadbolt shut behind me. I gulp, knowing I could die, right here, right now. As he sits across from me, I can no longer hold it in:

"You're a lich, aren't you?"

"Very clever, human. Your co-workers tried hard to act like they didn't know, but I received lots of feedback mentioning a human. I knew it had to be my new hire."

I nod slowly. "So is this where you kill me for my life essence or something? Silence me AND maintain your immortality?"

He chuckles, his bones clacking loudly together. "Ordinarily, yes. I've had humans hired by accident before. Always makes me tingle with excitement, but..." he puts a folder on the desk. "As I mentioned, your 'type' was mentioned in reviews. You were quite popular."

I open the folder. 'Best service I ever had, and it came from a human! - 5/5' 'Who knew a human could be so fun to chat with? No fear whatsoever! Would have liked fresh sheets though - 4/5' 'Fun and respectful employees, especially that human who was prepared to let me feed - 5/5'

I look up. "I was very impressed by your results, Myers. Why should I kill such a great employee? Not only is it hard to find good workers these days, but you've already become popular! It would be a terrible idea to get rid of you! With that being said, the hotel's secrets CANNOT get out. How much do you value your soul?"

I shrug. "If I valued it much, I wouldn't be so unbothered being here."

The lich laughs. "You really ARE a strange one! In which case, you'll want to get yourself comfortable living among our kind."

"Can you make arrangements for my accommodation?"

"I don't think I need to." He turns a couple pages and points a bony finger at a specific review. 'Too bad I couldn't get closer to that human; he was charming, cute, funny, and I'd come back just to see him! - 5/5'

I smirk. "The succubus?"

"Yes. I heard a little rumour that you were considering her offer... well done for sticking to policy, but outside working hours is YOUR business. Of course you could say no to one of my best customers; I could also change my mind on letting you live."

"You wouldn't?" I'm scared, but I want to try to catch him out if I can, 'establish' myself, so to speak.

The lich grins. "Are you trying to test me?" He stands up, a hand reaching out.

I shrink back. "Well... kind of? I didn't mean to offend..."

"Very bold. I like your style. But I did mean what I said. After all, what will you do for living arrangements without the succubus? Take the offer, or I can't trust that you'll figure a way to live with us. So?" He tilts his hand from a shoulder-grabbing position to a handshake position.

Realising that my life really IS on the line, I dive for the hand. "I'd be honoured."

"SEE? WE KNEW YOU WOULD TURN THIS INTO SOMETHING EVIL!"

I look at the knights curiously, being careful not to send the wrong message. "What do you mean?"

"You just went out into the plaza as usual, then we lost sight of you! That's not uncommon, but what WAS uncommon is you not heading back to the castle by sunset!"

I look out the window of the inn. It really IS getting late... if the king is missing... I down the rest of my drink. "Ok, I need to be honest with you, as we won't get anywhere if we start keeping secrets. I'm not the king, I'm a shapeshifter, about the only person who knew that is the lovely bartender who pretended not to know. I dress like his majesty regularly for free drinks. That's about it."

The knights look at each other confused. "But... then..."

One of them raises a weapon. "You do anything to him? You holding him hostage?"

I hold my hands up. "I would never! Our kind don't waste time, if I were going to do anything to him I'd have done it AGES ago! We do our best to keep our secret safe!"

Another knight clears his throat. "So... why would you tell us?"

"Because I had two options: pretend to ACT like someone I'm not, taking on a task which I have no clue what to do, or tell the truth and offer my help. Believe me, I'm worried about his majesty too. Are the citizens aware?"

"They shouldn't be..."

I smile warmly. "Ok, I'm sure you all know that a panicked kingdom is bad. Here's what I'm thinking: allow me to take the throne just for the night, I won't make any decisions or anything, we just need to fool EVERYONE into believing the king is safe. Then, in the morning, I'll decide to 'have an adventure', and I'll search day and night for him. I won't rest until he's safe."

The knights look at each other, then nod. "We don't have much choice. We all need to trust each other. But we won't hesitate to kill you if we suspect any attempt at taking the throne for real. Understood?"

"Perfectly."

The knights escort me back to the castle. I make sure to eat well and get an early night's sleep. I'll need to be fully prepared for the following day. I look out the window of the king's chambers. "I'll risk my own life to save you, your majesty. I promise I'll do whatever it takes to get you back to your kingdom safe."

I want a part 2, a follow-up! I can only imagine he'd just do ANYTHING he can to occupy himself! Maybe a progressive day-by-day comment written in diary format (even though this guy definitely does not have a diary), or even just a part 2 where we see him come out and how he's changed?
