Jeff Beck was one of the guitar greats, from the 1960’s through today. Though not as well-known as Hendrix, Clapton or Page, he was extremely talented, developing a unique sound and style. He was also law unto himself, taking left turns throughout his career. He will surely be missed by his many fans worldwide.

The title actually inverts the matters for which John Matuszak was “best known.” The factoid of him playing “Sloth” in “The Goonies” is a “lesser-known” fact.

Reply to The Rolling Stones dressed in WWII nurse drag for the cover of a single, c. 1966. by CosmicRamen
The single was entitled, “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?” This photo was the flip-side to the US version of the single, shot by photographer Jerry Schatzberg, who famously shot the Dylan “Blonde On Blonde,” LP. He later became a noted filmmaker.
In the UK, the song reached #5, and reached US #9. It also reached Top Ten in Sweden, Norway, Germany, Ireland and The Netherlands (#2).
Two 1966 promo films were recently released on the Rolling Stones website. One featured the group as they appeared on the New York- Schatzberg shoot, and the other from a live Royal Albert Hall performance in London.

Reply to TIL The "Semolina Pilchard" mentioned in "I Am the Walrus" is a reference to Scotland Yard drug squad detective Norman "Nobby" Pilcher, who led a midnight drug raid on John Lennon's London flat in October 1968. He'd targeted musicians Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Eric Clapton and Donovan prior to that. by 54_actual
Sgt. Norman Pilcher, (1935-2021) had a celebrated career of targeting and busting pop stars, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono, George and Pattie Harrison, and members of the Rolling Stones. Pilcher was, however, later accused of planting evidence in later years. Several stars complained that drugs had been “found” in places where the drugs had not been kept. George Harrison’s “stash” was allegedly found in a shoe, yet George noted that he was “a tidy person,” and the drugs found “weren’t his.” The arrests of several of these musicians sometimes plagued their careers for many years.
He was convicted to four years’ imprisonment following mid-70’s conspiracy charges. In his 2020 book, “Bent Coppers,” he alleged there was corruption throughout the police agency, and that his planting evidence was at the urging of his superiors.
In addition to Lennon’s mention in the song, “I Am The Walrus,” Sgt. Norman was also the inspiration for the character “Spiny Norman,” in the Monty Python “Piranha Brothers” sketch.

Several earlier examples of a “tape-manipulated“ hit record were those recordings by guitarist Les Paul, who used overdubs, speed manipulation and effects to create many hit songs, starting in the late 1940’s. His recordings with his (then) wife Mary Ford were among the most popular, with some 17 titles reaching top ten status and a few reaching #1. The majority of their hits were recorded and released before 1955.

Reply to comment by teeyodi in Jeff Beck working up a sweat in 1971. RIP dude. by foofoofum
He was sometimes “under the radar” compared to the bigger names in music, but made some pop single appearances, such as Bon Jovi’s “Blaze of Glory,” Tina Turner’s “Private Dancer,” and several songs by Rod Stewart (his former bandmate) on “People Get Ready,” and “Infatuation.”
His work with The Yardbirds in the 1960’s covered some well-known tunes, such as “Over, Under, Sideways, Down.” Later, he had a few hits and many albums under his own name. His early Jeff Beck Group released “Beck’s Bolero,” “You Shook Me,” and “I Ain’t Superstitious.” Later, he did mostly instrumental work with George Martin producing, such as the song, “Superstition,” which Stevie Wonder wrote with Beck in mind, but later released himself. He also collaborated with Jan Hammer, Les Paul, Roger Waters, Imelda May, Chrissie Hynde, and Stevie Ray Vaughan among others.
Not known to all music fans, but appreciated by those who found his approach to music engaging.
