Yes, “cut outs” or remainders are a real thing in music, video and even the book sales world. And, as mentioned, it has been a means for overstocked or hard-to-sell items to be sold cheaply and more quickly.
Some items were notoriously quick to go to cut-out or remainder status. In the world of LP’s, though it sold in the millions in pre-orders, the Peter Frampton/Bee Gees “Sgt. Pepper” soundtrack was put on remainder/cut-out status in weeks. For record collectors, some LP’s are easy to find with the cut-out “notch” or a hole drilled in the corner. Sometimes the upc is cut as well.
In the book world, these items are sometimes “best sellers” or items that loose interest quickly, like political memoirs or tell-all books. The “remainder” marking on books tends to be a magic marker swipe across the back spine. Sometimes the upc will be obliterated. One chain bookstore where I worked returned the covers of “unsold” or damaged paperbacks to the publisher, by the dozens. The publisher simply asked us to “discard” the rest of the book. Even now, you will sometimes see “used” books with “no cover. “ These are likely items that were discarded by the book retailers and claimed as not able to be sold.

Was this in the DC area or another part of the country? The show was very popular in the DC area for decades. The host was Mac McGarry, who would sometimes make unexpected asides during the show. The highlight was sometimes when he called down the cheerleaders or the marching band from the stands.
I’d agree, it was cool seeing the shows being filmed.I was there for another syndicated show. The tv studio itself was far smaller than expected, since the cameras did not show the entire view.

The press team was represented by NBC broadcaster Jessica Savitch, Washington Post columnists Art Buchwald and David S. Broder. All were well-known and regarded in the journalistic world, and local to the production at DC NBC affiliate WRC-TV. Savitch died tragically about four years later.
Though changing hosts and broadcast channels, the show, which began in 1961, continues today.

Breck was a shampoo that featured different blends for dry, oily or normal hair. They used to have ads in the 30’s through 80’s featuring young ladies with pretty hair, and they called them “Breck Girls.” Some of the most famous models were Breck Girls, including Kim Basinger, Jacklyn Smith, Cheryl Tiegs, Brooke Shields, Christie Brinkley and others. The person mentioning this was trying to make a compliment of the highest order. Like saying: “your mom is a unique beauty.”
