Carjackings are generally a crime of opportunity. A small crew will drive around in usually a stolen car and spot someone say dropping off a delivery. Or getting into their car outside of a building and just pop out. Or they’ll hang around a gas station. But mostly its people getting into or out of cars being approached by 2 armed people People take valuable, common cars. Recycle them for drive bys, chop em up or just ditch them later. Hyundais and kias were singled out for theft since they were easy to steal after a tiktok challenge went viral

Its a weird thing about DC I have noticed after living in other cities. The crime is widely distributed. Theres only a few very low crime neighborhoods. On the other hand, crime was highly concentrated in a few neighborhoods in other cities I’ve lived in. I think the unpredictability of it is anxiety provoking for me

When you live with so few people, a community finds you. In a city, you have to make your community. In DC, there are casual sports leagues, religious or political orgs, community service groups, alumni associations, your future classmates, even certain types of gyms are geared towards groups. Find a hobby you enjoy with people you enjoy and lean into it. Then the city won’t feel so big. Also walk like youre in a rush at all times when alone🤣

Petworth Fitness is a crossfit-style gym that is relatively chill. You’ll have to learn to move in all sorts of new ways and its physically difficult, but the motivation doesn’t come from people yelling at you. People don’t drink the crossfit kool-aid nearly as much there either.

Depends on where you lived as a child. If it was crestwood or chevy chase, somewhere along those lines, Columbia Heights can be a bit scary at times. But its a good location near things someone your age may enjoy. If you lived in say petworth or shaw, then maybe slightly a more noticeable air of crime and def more bike lanes, but mostly the same DC. Navy yard, the waterfront and Shaw have more things now. DC has grown into more of a food city now then it was back then I think, which is good!

2650 for a two bedroom is pretty low for that neighborhood, actually for most desirable neighborhoods in DC. My first apartment here was not too far away in the U st corridor. It cost 2450…for a basement unit 1 bedroom….8 years ago. The bedroom didn’t have a window and the building didn’t have amenities. So be careful! But the neighborhood is comfortably walkable. There is no completely “safe” neighborhood in DC but adams morgan is on the lower risk side. There are still shootings, carjackings etc but not nearly as many as other parts of town.

I am a physician. Just the likely order of replacement of us. Much of good medical decision making is already algorithmic, just with humans not AI yet. Surgical robots are quite advanced in their movement capabilities, its only a matter of time before an AI can replace the decision making aspect of operating
