People choose to live in all different places for all different reasons. That's great that you have a 3 bedroom in the heights for $2500. Someone else chooses to live downtown and pay more. You can't seriously sit here and say with a straight face the heights is a vastly different area than downtown and may prefer one neighborhood over the other. If you prefer the heights, that's great. Luckily you don't need to move into this apartment. Someone else might prefer the suburbs and get a whole house for that price.

By the way, this apartment is absurd to me too. But I live in a 1 bedroom in PH and my husband and I both work from home. Some would say that's insane and we should upgrade to a 2 bedroom elsewhere in JC. But we don't have a lot of stuff, love our neighborhood, love our apartment, and couldn't dream of living anywhere else. Literally everyone chooses where they live based on what they prioritize. Do I think this person is arrogant coming to this sub and thinking that someone taking over their lease should pay all these ridiculous fees? Absolutely. But I'm not going to pretend there isn't a market for people wanting to pay this rent. There wouldn't be dozens of brand new high-rises downtown at premium rents right now if there wasn't.

Got i. I can tell you as someone that's moved 5 times in the past 9 years in Jersey City that I would not even consider contacting someone if they advertised a room available without a price shown, even if there were pictures (which you don't have) and I loved the place. Good luck.

Bayonne is sheltered by Staten island, not as exposed to direct ocean wind. Also low elevations all around Bayonne so the wind carries over the land. Downtown JC has high elevations on the west so the wind gets trapped. Hoboken is actually worse with regard to bathtub affect (it's why flooding is worse, because the western part of Hoboken actually goes down in elevation), but further up the river so less wind.

Also not based on science.

The Hudson River is directly connected to the ocean, unlike the Chicago River. And we're at the lowest part of the Rive (closest to the ocean, so strongest winds) unlike Hoboken or weehawken further upstream.

If you're talking about downtown specifically, we're at sea level and the hill to go up into journal square or the heights is only about a mile back, so the air doesn't dissipate, unlike somewhere like, Manhattan, for example, which has more land for the wind to spread around. The wind just stays down here and whips around.

This is not based on science. Just thinking out loud.

THIS is the sleeper move. I'm mad I didn't think of it myself. But I'd only go this route on public transit - you'd fly to Port Authority in that bus lane in no time!

Driving though... having to cross two rivers and drive through Manhattan still sounds like torture to me. OP, if your work hours are off peak, this may be a serious option for you.

There are very few areas in Jersey City where this commute would be fast, but Greenville is not one of them. Maybe I could see you wanting to do this commute via public transit from JSQ or downtown, though downtown sounds out of your budget - but I would never recommend ever going to Brooklyn/Queens with a car from NJ during standard working hours... It's just a nightmare.

And the Holland Tunnel closing complicates non-standard working hours.

Good luck, hope you find something that works out for you!

I am not sure why you think Jersey City would be an easier commute than Staten Island to get to LIC, especially if you need to drive. You need to cross two rivers and travel through Manhattan to get from Jersey City to LIC. Have you checked Google maps during rush hour to get an idea of how long this will take? I suspect 2+ hours.

Edited to add: and if you happen to work off hours where there isn't rush hour traffic, sorry no luck there either as the Holland Tunnel closing 6 nights a week for the next 2 years. You quite literally will pass your current home to get home (LIC>Brooklyn>Staten Island>Bayonne>Jersey City).

Where are you moving from that you think Greenville is a better option? This is a bad idea, even if you weren't commuting to LIC.

Commuting to LIC makes it an even worse idea. Via public transit it's 3+ methods of transit, when timed perfectly, is over an hour. And driving? Unless you work off hours you are driving through 5 miles of local roads to get to the Holland Tunnel, then sitting through rush hour Holland Tunnel traffic, then driving across Manhattan during rush hour, then taking another bridge.... just... no. This is the worst idea.

Become a regular at a neighborhood spot - Ed and Mary's or white star, and walk the half mile to Newark Ave when you feel like something more exciting. Not that serious. Is it more residential than literally on Grove Street? Sure but it's not the suburbs. Better to be near a park, in my opinion, especially when you're walking distance to bars anyway.

Close to the water is not any closer to Newark Ave, so not sure why that's relevant.

I was trying to go to JC from WTC during the morning rush hour, around 8 AM. The PATH had JUST gotten off and every turnstile was full with people going towards the city. I waited for what felt like a really long time but it was probably just a few seconds trying to squeeze in and gave up. I finally just walked through the ADA accessible turnstile that was open as people were walking through it. I had my metrocard IN MY HAND and a PA cop yelled at me from across the station to pay or he would ticket me. So I had to just go back around. I'm happy he didn't give me a ticket, but it was quite literally the ONLY Time I have not paid. It was 100% my fault but was so embarrassing.

Ah yes, tent cities all over town but at least you can get to the airport easily. Also if you want to go literally anywhere outside of the city. Good luck doing that without a car. Here you could get to the Jersey shore beaches, Long Island, beaches, hiking in the Hudson valley, Boston, DC and Philly, all without a car.

Never mind the fact that you can get to three major airports from Jersey City in under an hour representing, hubs of many major airlines in this country. Two of which are international.

Everyone in Jersey City knows you have to Uber to the airport, knows how to travel on the public transit here (one payment method for NJ only transit operated by NJ transit and another one for the PATH operated by port authority since it's in two states, not really that complicated), and knows construction is booming in journal square. Five years ago you would have been saying that about downtown. But thanks for the tips.
