Why doesn’t every landlord raise rent to a million dollars a month? Demand is very high in New York, but it’s still finite at a given price point.

See also: vacancy taxes. They’re fine, they just don’t do much and they virtually always come up as a deflection from serious policy.

Weird how landlords in Austin and Buffalo all happen to be better, less greedy people than ones in Boston and New York.

Great, you can be “secure” in a job with shit pay and shit benefits. Or if you’re remotely bright or ambitious, you’ll probably bail and move to the private sector.

Not in most of the city. If you feel sick or you’re in Chinatown, it’s polite to wear a mask. Otherwise don’t worry about it as long as you’re fully vaccinated.

in your opinion, how long should deadbeats get to live rent-free before being kicked out? Because we’re at three years and counting.

If you hate “monstrosity mega buildings” you should probably live basically anywhere except New York.

Fun fact, the population of Manhattan peaked in 1905.
Turns out, it’s the density stupid.

NIMBY + zoning + union sweetheart deals. It’s insanely difficult, slow, and expensive to build anything when everyone gets a day and everyone gets to wet their beak.

Fuck the UN though. We get next to no benefit from it and have to play host to a pack of dictators every year.

There are two main things we have to do:
1: build housing. Yes it will take a few years, but this is a long-term problem. There’s no solution to housing a growing population other than building more homes.
2: defund the nonprofit sector. The city has abandoned its role in service provision and outsourced it to nonprofits, which are wildly inefficient and prone to corruption. We pay an average of 5k a month per bed to the shelters. We have the money to provide excellent social services, we just waste it.
