Current Newark leadership don't want true skyscrapers. A true skyscraper or super tall is a symbolic "green light" to multiple developers & gentrification.

As of last week, the nature flood basin open space area at the interchange of RT21 & I-280 was suddenly fenced off & there are now Piles of dirt & rocks, concrete debris left by dumptruck.

Theres a nice row of similar 3 story rowhomes on Broadway & Second Ave.

Another block on Broad St btw 3rd & 4th ave has a Brooklyn feel to it.

I agree with you there. Amazon from the get-go was going to Arlington Virginia. This entire hq2 thing was a scam, US charade to pick desperate cities against each other to see who could offer the most ridiculous tax incentives. We all know Newark won that contest. No other city in America was able to match what New Jersey offered on behalf of Newark. But the whole hq2 thing was a farce to see if Arlington Virginia would match the lowest offer. That's exactly what happened! Even though the Arlington Virginia deal was inferior to newark's, Amazon chose Arlington anyway. To save face, they decided to split it between NYC and Arlington VA. Of course the reality, they wanted everything in Virginia. That's why they were so quick to bolt as soon as New York congresswoman AOC complained about the NYC offer.

But Newark screwed up big time with Amazon when they caved in to a bunch of leftist protesters against an airport warehouse for Amazon. I'm sure Newark is now on Jeff Bezos no go list.

The only way to end homelessness is to rebuild all the Mental Hospitals with demolished! All this homeless epidemic began as soon as mental psychiatric institutions were abolished. Expecting mentally unstable people to maintain a schedule regimen of taking pills has landed us here. Most of these homeless people are not people that are down on their luck like we had during the Great Depression. These are 99% alcohol and substance abusers who are trapped in a mental Loop they can't get out of. They need to be institutionalized until the demons are out of the system and they are able to function as normal human beings. And if they are never capable of being functional, then they should stay there. Not as prisoners, they should be free during the day to go about,work, shop, visit nearby family but like a halfway house, provided they follow the rules.

There is a reference to Philadelphia on the Garden State Parkway Southbound in Woodbridge or Metuchen just before the exit take you to Turnpike interchange 11. South on the turnpike 30 mention of Philadelphia until you reach what used to be the Pennsylvania Turnpike extension which is now the new 95 South. That's where Philly references appear. It's been a painful years but last I remember most control City Signs continue to say Del Memorial Bridge or Camden. NB on 95 now says "New York" as of new signage.

Unlike regular NJ Transit trains with conductors punching tickets, Light Rail operates on an honor System of ticket validation. The purpose of validating a ticket is to prevent you from using the same ticket both ways or handing it over to a friend to use. By not having a ticket validated or stamped, there's no way to prove you didn't just get that ticket from someone else or you're trying to double dip. Now if the cop sees your receipt and there's no reasonable way you could have double dipped within that time window and he still gives you a ticket, he's a douchebag. But it's a million times cheaper to just pay the ticket than to fight it. It's not like you got a DUI or something requiring a lawyer. It sucks, but you got to be careful and follow directions.

You don't grow the city population by moving people from one block of the city to another. Development is meant to increase the population. The city used to have close to half a million residents. The city fathers built an infrastructure to support 1 million people because the expected to expand Newark into all of Essex County. But lo and behold racist anti Italian and anti Irish bigotry dominating the 19th century NJ legislature passed laws to prohibit Newark, Camden & JC from growing further and introduced the dead end obstacle & referendum process to annexations. Newark has the same square mileage as Manhattan. Obviously Newark is not going to get manhattanized, but it can easily support half a million.

Newark recently denied & probably killed a proposal to save the dilapidated Riviera Hotel by converting it to market Apartments.

The city insisted on keeping it a rooming home. When developers stated the project isn't financially viable & wont be able to secure construction loans, the city said "We are not governed by economics alone, PEOPLE NEED TO LIVE THERE!"
