How old was the counter top, and what was it? Like if they took 20 year old Formica and put marmolian (I don't even know what that is, it sounds almost like a prehistoric animal! Or is it carpet?)?

'I know my money needs to be liquid to help family out when needed'. Do you mean like wife and kids, or are you supporting extended family, like your parents?

Did the new tenants lease say that they needed to have the elect in their name? There is someone on charge of utilities. Like a regulatory agency. Hammer the utility harder. What does it mean that you transferred the account to the roommate. Like he was responsible, or just paying in your absence. I think they can write it off, you just have to be persistent. Get letter from landlord that you weren't living there then. Could you get the names of the tenants from other utility records? Ask your congressman for assistance?

Do you have laundry room on ground floor? Could you rig something up there. For a month visit, you could route the used shower water out back . For toilet, you could rent a portapotty. The handicapped ones are big, and if just a person or two for the week, it wouldn't be stinky like portapotties at events. You might be able to rent a shower too for like construction site or camping
