I'll go with my top 3
Breaking Benjamin - This band defines my roots as a 00s kid raised on Alt, Post Grunge and Nu Metal. Emotionally charged, melodic music with a metal kick to it
Balmorhea - This band represents my appreciation for traditional instruments, but also for experimental structures and textures
Rishloo - This band is an example of the perfect fusion of the previously listed attributes of my taste. I didn't have any way to make amends between what seemed like very separated music styles until I found Prog. This band was the first one of many and still might be my favorite band

Reply to Midnight City (M83) vs Electric Feel (MGMT by gNomad88
Is Electric Feel about drugs? I honestly thought it was simply about skinny dipping with a hot chick. Certainly a very literal take on the lyrics though
The bass and delayed Flute keyboard part in Electric Feel is so good, but I think Midnight City has better Vocals and layering. I can't pick a favorite, but if you point a gun at me I would probably blurt out Midnight City

He was talking about the SM58, but many mics require an audio interface. Basically you need to use a USB connection to connect to a computer, and some mics do have a USB connection, but most professional quality musician microphones use XLR cables. An audio interface is basically a little hub that you plug your XLR cables from your microphone into (or 1/4" cables which are also common but are mostly for other instruments) and the audio interface itself connects to the computer with USB and sends the audio into the PC
Like someone else said, a really high quality, professional, and relatively cheap setup would be a Shure SM58 microphone and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface. In fact I'm a home studio musician and this is very close to my own setup

Here's a basic tip I wish I had been told sooner: when recording a guitar part, record it with two mono tracks instead of stereo tracks, and make each mono track a different recording (in other words play it twice) and then pan one of those tracks all the way to the left, and the other one all the way to the right. This is almost the same as recording one stereo track, but the difference is that having two separate recordings of the same part makes it sound much more full. This isn't universal, and sometimes you'll instead want to pan one part to the left and another very different part to the right, and sometimes you might want a lead part to be panned in the center. But always record with mono tracks when recording guitar, and usually panning two different recordings like that works best. Sorry if you already knew any of this

Reply to Music vs Lyrics by FlightBunny
Lyrics aren't music. They're lyrics. Poetry that has been given a musical form. If you like the vocal melody, then that's one thing, but lyrics are just words. So, if someone likes a song for the lyrics rather than anything else, then they don't like music. They like poetry. Nothing wrong with liking lyrics, but if you listen to music only for the lyrics, then you don't actually listen to music

Like whatever you like. Anyone can. But don't think that liking something means that it's good. If you say "I like Cardi B" then I literally can't tell you that you're wrong. But if you say "Cardi B is good" then thats an objective claim that anyone is entitled to challenge. Likewise if your argument is "it's good because I like it" then you're the worst possible kind of elitist. I for one have things that I like but I don't think they're good, and things that I dislike that I think are good. As long as you don't confuse the two, you're valid

Alrighty, well in my opinion, modern prog is the best corner of the rock and metal scene today. Vola is the newest one I can think of, but there's also Haken, Caligula's Horse, Leprous, Anathema, and a bunch more. Gojira and Mastodon are two of the biggest metal bands at the moment who are actually good. I also love post rock and neoclassical stuff from the instrumental side of things. Post Rock has names like Lights and Motion, Mogwai, Swans, Collapse Under The Empire, Explosions In the Sky, This Will Destroy You and more. My favorite neoclassical artists are Balmorhea, Olafur Arnalds, Max Richter, and Luke Howard. Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle and Deftones are some bands I've enjoyed for years

I can't really recommend any of them. There's always some kind of bias since music is at least mostly subjective. What I can recommend is that you listen to an album yourself and form your own opinion of it. If you're trying to find new artists, start with what music you already like and follow the ropes from that stuff to the things you haven't heard. All music is stylistically connected. I could even try and recommend you some newer artists that I like, and I think they're good, but I don't know for sure that you'll agree

The Beatles. At the time, the only songs I knew were by The Beatles were She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand. I still hate both those songs. But then I found out they did Here Comes The Sun and Come Together and thought oh never mind they're not bad. Then I listened to Eleanor Rigby, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, A Day In The Life, Helter Skelter, Something, Revolution 9, and a bunch of others, and looked into when that stuff came out, what else was coming out at that time, and when came after wards. After all that, I realized they were the most influential band of all time and one of the best in general

Not an album, but a 6 track EP called I Don't Know What I Am by Reliqa. Better than any album I heard this year. For next year I'm quite excited about Haken's Fauna, Karnivool's next album which isn't confirmed yet, and the potential next album by Caligula's Horse
