I feel like in some environments it feels necessary to masquerade a little bit. Like in the workplace when youāre trying to build your income you want to be perceived as valuable as possible.
But I feel like overall masquerading is harmful because we could get so caught up in seeking validation from others we don't focus on satisfying ourselves.

Memento mori can definitely make us uneasy on the surface, but is powerful when truly understood
Thanks for sharing that! I like the sentiment of a good life meaning different things to different people

The part that sticks out to me the most is the concept of ābeing worthy of old ageā
I guess it can mean a lot of things to different people
I think iāll be worthy of old age if I havenāt been tainted with negativity by the time I get thereāif I still have a positive spirit, can have fun and be creative

Without the right guidance early on itās so easy to fall on that track of comfort seeking
I imagine some will eventually take a look around and wonder how they got there

That definitely makes sense! A large gap between childhood expectations and elderly reality can cause that feeling

I appreciate the response! And that definitely makes sense. I can see how the dissonance between old memories, beliefs, and values and new ones could cause us to wonder what our true self is
Thanks for that š

If you donāt mind me asking, being in your 40s, what are one of those things thatās a focus for you?
Just curious about if your perspective is different now on certain areas than it was 10 years ago. Like maybe family and friends means a lot more!

Personal finance is definitely a subject where the advice we receive is shakey, all over the place, and could have large impact on our lives in a short time
High up on the list of advice to take with a grain of salt and do your own investigation

Thatās a great point! I can definitely see how a lot of advice quickly ages
Economics is a perfect example. Iām also thinking about how in past decades there was an attitude of ātoughen upā, but nowadays people are more encouraging of you not masking how you feel and actually addressing it

Thanks for explaining!! I agree 100% with both points
Accumulating valuable knowledge isnāt the goal, it needs to be applied. And platitudes, listicles, cheap self-help content etc. are often empty and invaluable

What makes you feel that way? Do you feel the same way about books?
I have the opinion of taking advantage of knowledge that exists so I donāt have to figure everything out for myself
I think part of life is that every generation, or all youth on average, stands on the shoulders of the people who came before them

Wow this is great! Iām totally with you
Your first and last example in particular stand out to me because those are pieces of advice that sound undeniably safe, but still have a lot of nuance to them
Itās making me wonder if there is any piece of general advice that can be blindly followed.
Thanks for sharing this! š

Definitely a point iām with you on!
I donāt think we should carry the pressure of constantly having to be productive
TreatThompson OP t1_j3xyzja wrote
Another example I think of is the idea we should hustle and grind your whole life
I know recently āhustlingā has become a topic where people feel extremely for or against, but I think overall we shouldnāt let hustling make us lose sight of the big pictureāwhat are we hustling for?
If we hustle and never enjoy the fruits of our labour or the process, then it was pointless
