Hotels should be cheaper because you get less for your money it's a tiny studio apartment except with no kitchen and lots of times not even a fridge or couch. When you stay at an airbnb lots of times its multiple rooms, living room, kitchen, etc. The fact that airbnbs are cheaper AND have more amenities AND are more conveniently located to non-touristy places seems like a temporary misprice of market goods.

Airbnb absolutely shit the bed by allowing hosts to fuck around and set exorbitant cleaning fees though. I had another one that listed for a 3-bedroom in the headline/search results but then made us a pay an extra fee to get the unlock code for the 3rd bedroom when we showed up. Airbnb only refunded my money when I threatened to file a complaint for false advertising with the attorney general.

I didn't say it was a base salary I said it was a total comp and of course if they just issued a SQL query in the payroll system and took the MIN() and MAX() then its absolutely been done in good faith.

What good does it do if the company just gives everyone the same base salary (lets say 100K) and then still has a very widely skewed total comp range because some people are better at negotiating than others?

Your annual pay is the same regardless of how much PTO they give you though I definitely agree its part of the package. WFH falls into the same bucket I'd say.

Sure but if they have to publish "people in this job level in NYC last year made somewhere in the range of $75k - $1.5M" it is far better in terms of the transparency that people are looking for so much.

I grew up in CA and had no problem leaving family. We already have 4 kids, she doesn’t want to leave because she likes the schools they’re in for now. Depending on what happens when they have to do the middle school application bullshit might change her mind, or not who knows. Most people are just afraid to start fresh and she’s one of them, I’ve always been unusual in my ability to just up and go where life’s opportunities are and cut losses when things aren’t as good as they used to be.

I still gotta convince my wife to leave. She grew up here so it’s not going well so far.

I don’t know if it will make me happy but I’ll have more money and won’t be picking up needles from my stoop. No mortgage and a shitload less in taxes opens up a lot of options to come back to the city for long weekends and avail ourselves of cultural options.

Would probably just keep the house here and rent it out so it’s not like a 1-way door; if we hate it we could always come back.

I too would like to see it get better but I think wfh is the game changer here. More and more businesses and people will leave and the city will continue a downward slide, that’s my prediction anyway.

Though by cracks me up what I really mean is it makes me irrationally angry about the stupidity of the whole thing.
