With an income of $70k, your mortgage should generally not be more than $2k per month (about 35% of your income).

Assuming a 30 year fixed loan at 6.5%, that translates to borrowing about $320k. With a $170k down payment that adds up to $490k. Pretty much absolute max, but could be less if you have other debts or expenses.

You can definitely find a homes in western Washington for that amount.

I wouldn’t describe it that way. There were many factions fighting for democracy or ideologies. They only agreed with each other on getting rid of the Shah. So they were united in overthrowing the current regime.

Once that happened, there was another power struggle for who would control the new government. The religious hardliners won that struggle by consolidating power and eliminating opposition from the secular moderates.

When he came to power, the monarchy was mostly ceremonial (like how it is the UK today). The US and UK governments fomented a coup of the democratically government to give the shah absolute power.

It was mostly over the oil refinery complex (largest oil refinery in the world at that time) near the Iraq border in Abadan that British oil companies had built, that the democratically elected government had nationalized. This is the same refinery complex involved in the Iran/Iraq war that Saddam Hussein had tried to seize.

Will fines change behavior? Maybe if they are strictly and regularly enforced. That costs money, puts a financial burden on many people, and limits what else state patrol does with officer time.

It’s not clear how much it would really move the needle here.

The root cause of closures is inclement weather leading to more dangerous driving conditions. Yeah, people should be more prepared but carelessness is not the root cause of the closures.

For a rental car, check that you can drive it into Canada. I don’t know if you’ll be able to get a one way rental to another country. Or it could at least be very expensive. If that doesn’t work out, consider returning a car in Seattle or Bellingham, then taking the train. There is service but it may only be once per day.

On Christmas, most restaurants and all tourist attractions will be closed. You’ll likely have more options in a bigger city like Seattle. Or plan to be somewhere remote like a National Park where you’ll be eating where you’re staying anyways.
