Plenty of black swans in Perth, Western Australia. This would be more like a gold swan event, so rare it has never happened before. A once in all history event, not just a once in x number of decades. The magnitude of the impact of the singularity can not be exaggerated. Every aspect of every human will be changed drastically forever. I'd say that that is pretty big.

Vaccines use your immune system to do the actual work. The type of vaccines you are thinking of basically teach your immune systen how to fight off a particular virus. These cancer vaccines basically teach your immune system to fight off cancer cells instead of viruses.
Calling it a cure is misleading in that cures are basically considered almost 100% effective but this approach, at least at this point, is only effective some or most of the time.

Why are countries still persuing space stations? We need to establish bases on rocky bodies (moons, planets and asteroids). Space stations are yesterday's tech.

Exactly this. If we say looking at past data and trends and then projecting forward is not scientific, then basically climate science has to be added to that. In fact a huge chunk of science would be null and void and science would be labelled as a religion. Nothing about the singularity is non scientific, it is all based on observation and identifying trends and patterns in that data. If it weren't such an incredulous impact on our lives, no one would question it since the science is actually pretty clear and only the exact timing is really unclear.

Reply to Could AGI stop climate change? by Weeb_Geek_7779
AGI is not ASI. People here need to stop misrepresenting the ability of AGI. It won't be smarter than the average human (by definition). Given this, NO, it will only be able to come up with ideas that are as good as the ideas that an average human could come up with.
AGI will be great in the sense that it can do anything that an average human can do and in a robotic body, it will be able to function in the real world much like a human does. This basically means the end of the need for human labour. This in itself is massive and will change our world. However it is not going to be doing much beyond an average human.
ASI on the other hand is where the real magic starts happening. Then we get new thinking well beyond what humans can achieve. ASI will most likely come up with ways to mitigate and probably even reverse climate change in a cheap and generally acceptable manner. There is a decent chance that what it tells us to do won't make sense and may seem counter-intuitive to us. The results however will speak for themselves.

Seems you can't read and comprehend at the same time. Let me try spell this out for you in as simplistic terms as possible.
WE CAN DO BOTH.
That does not mean we can only do one thing. We create an automated world with humans not needing to work AND we fix climate change AND we deal with dictators AND we deal with racism AND we deal with global extremist.

Sorry, I'm still not clear, we have the tech to visit a planet around another star, so would we not have a fully automated society by then and I'd only be coming along for the vacation? I just cime along for the ride. All design, construction, logistics etc will be taken care of by the automated systems. I'd be happy to take an unusual vacation.

Ray is right about AGI/ASI and the singularity. Beyond that, I consider his work to be self serving and horribly wrong. Fortunately none if this relies on Ray so we will get our new world regardless of his poor mid term predictions and misguided ideas of the society that will result.

The electricity costs nothing to create. It is generated using equipment that is created by automation and run by automation. The 'feedstocks' or raw materials are mined using automation or grown using automation. Basically you have to wrap your mind around the idea that literally everything will be automated. There will be a market, just not one that uses money in any way. If I want/need a new widget, I go online, order ut and it gets delivered to my door. I don't pay anything as it is not required for the system to work. Meanwhile, the rest of the system makes sure to make a replacement of that widget ready for the next person. Ownership will be by the government on behalf of the people. Private ownership will be unnecessary as people will have whatever they want anyway so ownership would just be a burden.

Your 'capitalists' will be richer if UBI is higher. The higher, the better for them. Expect the UBI rate to increase until it meets maximum production which will be orders more than it is today.

My understanding is that it is a terrible choice. Apart from its effects on various materials making them brittle, it is extremely hard to stop it leaking everywhere. This is because of the size of the hydrogen atom which means that it can get through the smallest of gaps. Going all electric is the way to go.

I think they are referring to the power draw rather than the energy density. So it is possible they have a battery with a power density of 250wh/kg but are able to pull 500 watts from a 1kg battery for half an hour.
