I’m following the blog of a guy and his wife and dog who retired into a camper van and have been rolling around mexico for over a year now. They’re still alive and haven’t had the van stolen or been kidnapped or shot by cartels or anything.

don't wander down dark alleys alone at night and you'll be fine. the usual: keep your wits about you, maintain situational awareness, don't plug your earbuds in and crank up the tunes. Stay with other groups of people if you can. Doesn't sound like you'll have a car so no one should carjack you. (And if you were planning on having a car, don't. Parking up there is a bear.)

Depends entirely on the work. Stay away from litigation and aim for securities or corporate.

Way more people wanting to work, than work. The former librarian at my firm wanted to volunteer at the NGA library when she retired. Librarian. Archival experience.
She basically had to get in line after 18 other people with similar or better experience, to work for free for a few hours every other week.
Dumbarton Oaks needs a Byzantine specialist; the Museum of Women in the Arts needs a remote curator for a lot of money and no benefits. There will probably be 50 applicants for each position.
Check the universities, too. Some of them may have museum collections.

Former colleague of mine, a corporate lawyer, quit and went on to write cookbooks or something.
