Lots of people like hip hop in this sub.

Also, 70 percent of any genre tends to have a lot of crap in it. Name any genre and I'll name a band from it that sucks. The key is digging into the 30percent that makes a genre gold to understand why it's popular with so many people.

Hip hop isnt the main genre I listen to. But the hip hop I love, I love deeply.

Check out the real sht with smart deep lyrics and subject matter, and grooving beats... beyond money, btches, & bangin:

A Tribe Called Quest

De La Soul

Public Enemy

Jurassic 5

KRS ONE

Digable Planets

Eric B & Rakhim

Run The Jewells

...to name but a few.

Remember more than anything, hip hop is generally a newsletter from that person's world. And often time the world they are born into isn't pretty. You might have to do a little work to let them musically put you in their shoes.

I do something similar after getting tired of shuffled song by listening to a band I like's entire discography in order and hearing them evolve as a band and give myself that band's vibe for a few hours or days, depending on their output and what I'm doing. Gives me a vibe/ a soundtrack for that time.

(Also, I have many time travel albums that bring me right back to specific times in my life that I listened to on repeat at that time)

Do you mean mostly rappers? I would use the term "Lyrical Genius" more than "Musical Genius"... (Also the word "genius" is overused, when people really mean "talented")

Currently, I'd add Kendrick Lamar

And Lil Yachty's brand new album puts him in the running.

But if you're asking for actual musical geniuses of the past 40years...

Prince

Frank Zappa

David Bowie

Paul McCartney...

To name a few key actual musical geniuses.

Too late?? What pressure is being put on kids these days??

I started playing guitar seriously at 18 and have been making music ever since. I recently started to play drums at 50. It's never too late to learn. In fact, one should always be learning for their whole life. Keeps you young!

He comes out of the psychedelic blues scene in the US from the late 60s, so of course there's some "weird" stuff in there. And he's definitely more than his 70s hit songs which kind of turned into college party anthems in the 80s & 90s.

Depending on what you're into, a deep dive might yield some of his more interesting stuff.

Also, in general.. it's often the music you find "weird" that ends up being some of your favorite stuff as your ears attune to it, while the stuff you like right away can become boring and disposable.

Dogged determinism, who you know, and blind luck are the general things that tend to lead to "success" in the industry.

Unfortunately talent and originality aren't necessarily required.

So personal success, satisfaction in one's own work, becomes much more important since the chances of "making it big" are slim no matter how good an artist you might be.
