My partner and I were talking about this the other day. No other place where you find a population as passionate about where they live than RI as a whole. Go up to MA and you'll only find Sox and Boston merch, go to ME and you'll find pockets of town pride but rarely much pride for Maine outside of the major tourist areas, CT has... something about Mystic Aquarium probably idk.

But in RI you'll find people just generally pumped about RI as a state. As an ex-pat from Mass I found that very interesting when I first moved here.

My point was in regards to you claiming that homelessness is caused by poor choices, and your lack of sympathy for those who live on the streets. Many (Not all, but many) people who are homeless are in that situation through no fault of their own, and we live in a country with far too little reliable options to pick yourself back up again and simply "get a job" in order to get approved for a mortgage and start your life again. If it were that simple then we wouldn't be in the epidemic that we're in right now.

A profound percentage of the homeless in RI and MA became that way through no fault of their own through simply experiencing a medically traumatic event and subsequently trusting their doctor and their pharmacies who over prescribed them opioids during their recovery. Once that shit grabs hold, it's damn near impossible to live without a constant supply. Particularly when it does actual good for your physical ailments that just wont go away unless you take whatever drug it is you're addicted to.

This was by design, and the victims were lied to when it was purposefully advertised as non-addictive. Mix that with lack of support systems (i.e. family support)and in many, many cases, it can lead to a vicious, endless cycle of addiction that can plague a person right into homelessness.

I highly urge you to reconsider your view on homelessness. It's so much more complicated than simply telling them "Get a job" or "Stop doing what you're doing" without considering what needs to be done in order to get them on their way (safe injection sites, drug treatment centers, sober houses, compassionate job programs that invite those who have previous convictions or wrong doings, etc).

Right. I understand the optics of the situation aren't great, but jesus what else did you expect to happen? Shits about to get real cold real fast. Allowing people to camp out on marble and brick right outside the state house was just not an acceptable option when there are warming stations at just about every couple miles throughout the city and beyond.

There are plenty of ideals that no longer are practiced or preached in the catholic church that were once "catholic beliefs".

  • Working on sunday was once seen as a crime worthy of literal death, as sanctioned in Exodus 35:2.

  • Selling your own daughter into the slave trade is also sanctioned in Exodus 21:7.

  • If a guy sleeps with a woman and claims that she is not a virgin, the mom of the woman needs to bring a "cloth" "proving" that she's a "virgin". If a cloth can be provided and her virginity is proven, the guy is fined 100 sheckles of silver for slander. If no cloth cannot be provided, the woman is to be beat to death by her own neighbors.

Fuck out of here with the whataboutism in the name of the lord. Just accept the fact that the catholic church has proven to have cherry-picked specific things to preach hate against and which to casually, conveniently ignore. They are as ancient and as vile and as outdated as could possibly be in 2022, and are guilty are far more sins than they profess the LGBT community have committed.

I get what you're saying but I think this is just kind of "The style" now. Minimalist, bright, airy, white brick/exposed beams and duct work with wood accents, tall ceilings - it's just kind of the go-to styling throughout the US now. It's an easy way to justify tacking on an easy 15% to your costs as well.

I loved and continue to love any bakery that looks like it's been there for generations with little attention to decor (that to me signals you give way more of a shit about the quality of your product than anything else because your mind is focused on the right things first and foremost. Shout out to Bellas off Wompanoag in Riverside. Got a meatball sando that'll rock your soul), but I'll also admit I enjoy the experience of sitting down with a cup of coffee and a pastry in a spot that doesn't dark or claustrophobic.
